We deployed most of the covers February 9th. Even though the bloom is scattered, we wanted to save as many as we can. These covers are 50' wide by 300' long. The covers themselves are the same material that you would find on the inside of a baby diaper, only a little thicker. The majority of the blooms will be protected as long as the outside temperature remains at or above 26 F. Below 26 we begin to loose a few blooms, at 23 there is very little protection.
Here are a few shots from the roof of the store (below). This covered area represents about 2 acres, one side of the field.
Below - this is a shot looking down the middle road. On the left is 2 acres of Strawberries, on the right rear is a little over an acre of Blackberries and right front is another acre and half of Strawberries.
We did not cover all of the Strawberries, mainly because of a problem with the covers. Some of the ones that we purchased in 2000 deteriorated badly. We have new covers on the way but they have not arrived yet. The plants that are uncovered will be just fine, some of the newly opened blooms might be burned but all the blooms coming will be just fine.
We will leave these covers out for a couple of days, then roll them up and deploy them again when there is danger of a damaging freeze..
